So I was asked to try out and review a product called Hemp Hearts from the company Manitoba Harvest. As soon as I received the bag of hemp hearts, which are shelled hemp seeds and also a raw product, I opened it up to give it a taste! The flavor is not overbearing and tastes similar to a pine nut, except the size is much smaller. Not overwhelmingly crunchy either, which makes it easy to sprinkle on just about anything!
These small little seeds sure pack a lot of punch when it comes to nutrition! They pack a whopping 10 grams of protein and 10 grams of omegas 3 & 6 per 30 gram serving! What an easy way to boost the nutrition in just about anything!
I’ve sprinkled them on smoothies and topped off my morning oatmeal with them and it tastes great! Again, they are not too crunchy and the flavor is delicious! When I made my usual recipe for banana bread, I sprinkled them on top just before placing it in the oven and it came out so good! Just a little toasted crunch on top packed with protein and omegas. My children, who usually do not like nuts added to anything, really didn’t even notice they were there and didn’t seem to mind them at all!
My only problem using the Hemp Hearts, was that the bag was not very big and I wanted to try them out in a variety of things. That’s why I only sprinkled them on top of the banana bread recipe! You could certainly add a lot more into the dough before baking and/or substitute them for walnuts. I also added them to some peanut butter cookies that I had made. After rolling the dough into small balls, I rolled a few in the Hemp Hearts. They came out super tasty, as well!
At lunchtime, I sprinkled them onto my usual salad for an easy and quick nutrition boost! They tasted great and blended well with all of the other salad ingredients. Again, their flavor is subtle and won’t overbear your meal or recipe. I also coated a chicken breast in some Hemp Hearts before baking it, and it came out great! I’m convinced that this product can compliment any dish!
Hemp is a sustainable product that has many uses and is not the same as marajuana (cannabis). It will not cause any psychoactive effects or cause a false positive on a drug test. In addition to the many products produced with hemp, like clothing and paper, there is also hemp oil, hemp protein powders, and hemp hearts.
